The place is not as bad as described. The rapids can be reached on foot. The sanitary facilities could be improved. There is a communal kitchen available. There is also a sauna, but we did not use it.

You cannot choose your own place, it is assigned. We were given a not-so-nice spot. The surroundings were a bit messy (with garbage). There was only one shower for the entire area (university) and one toilet per gender. There was a small kitchen for washing dishes and a stove. There was a sauna available for one hour (advance booking) with access to the river, but it was unclear whether there was a cost associated with it as we couldn't find out.
