The place is now covered with stones and designated as a parking lot. Staying overnight with a camper van was easy, some McDonald's traffic around, and a train passing by with a signal every time - no traffic at night.

There is a gravel site located near the swimming pool in Schmalkalden/Näherstille. It is also near a McDonalds, so there may be some noise at night. However, it appears to be free to use. There is a small sign on a lantern that indicates it is an official camper place. Please note that there are no facilities for water or waste disposal available.
